Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), Gwalior presents
the Annual Report for the year 2022-23 as mandated under the provisions contained in
Memorandum of Association/Rules of the Institute. This report describes activities
for the period from 1.4.2022 to 31.3.2023.
LNIPE, Gwalior, formerly known as Lakshmibai College of Physical Education
(LCPE) was established by the Government of India, Ministry of Education in 1957 the
centenary year of the Indian freedom struggle, at Gwalior, where the great legend of
Indian freedom struggle Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi laid her life for the sake of Nation’s
freedom from the clutches of British rulers. As a tribute to her great martyrdom, this
Institute was named after this heroine of the war of Indian Independence. The main
objective behind its establishment was to uplift the stature of Physical Education in
India.
Premises of the Institute, spread in 153 acres of land is known as Shakti Nagar
which is located at Mela Road also known as Race Course Road, Gwalior. It is about
one and a half kilometer away from Gwalior Railway Station. The Gwalior city is
situated on Agra-Bombay Road (A.B. Road) highway and is well connected with other
cities by all means of conveyance.
At the time of its inception, this organization was afliated to Vikram
University, Ujjain. Subsequently in the year 1964, it got afliated with Jiwaji
University, Gwalior. Keeping in mind the unique status and promising future, it was
conferred the status of an Autonomous College by Jiwaji University, Gwalior in the
year 1982 and named as Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE),
empowering it to lay down its own admission policies, syllabi, examination systems
and other such procedures of independent nature. However, the powers to confer
degrees remained with Jiwaji University, Gwalior. This organization along with
Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), Patiala was earlier under the
administrative control of erstwhile Society for National Institutes of Physical
Education and Sports (SNIPES), which was amalgamated with Sports Authority of
India (SAI), New Delhi with effect from 1.5.1987.
In further recognition of unique educational services rendered by the Institute,
the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, on the advice of
the University Grants Commission, conferred the status of "Deemed University" to the
Institute by Notication No. F.9-14/92-U.3 dated 21.9.1995 under Section 3 of the UGC
Act, 1956. Consequently, it was de-linked from SAI and was registered as a Society
namely “Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education Society, Gwalior”
under the Madhya Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 1973. This is the only Deemed
University in India in the eld of Physical Education. At the time of its inception, this organization was afliated to Vikram
