The Constitution of India is the supreme law of the land. It lays down the framework defining the fundamental political code, structure, procedures, powers, and duties of government institutions. The Preamble to the Constitution declares India to be a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic and secures to all its citizens: Justice, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. These words are not merely decorative but constitute the soul of the Constitution. Part IV of the Constitution deals with the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP). These principles are guidelines for the framing of laws by the government. Although these principles are "non-justiciable" (meaning they cannot be enforced by the courts), they are fundamental in the governance of the country. It shall be the duty of the State to apply these principles in making laws to establish a just society. One of the most significant features of the Indian Constitution is the separation of powers between the Legislature, the Executive, and the Judiciary. The Legislature makes laws, the Executive implements them, and the Judiciary interprets them. In case of any violation of Fundamental Rights, a citizen can approach the High Court under Article 226 or the Supreme Court under Article 32. The writ jurisdiction of the courts empowers them to issue orders to any authority to enforce the rights of the citizens. Thus, the Constitution stands as a shield against tyranny and arbitrariness.
