The FATA merger bill, formally known as the 25th Constitutional Amendment Bill, was a historic move by the Government of Pakistan to integrate the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) into the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Passed by the National Assembly in May 2018, the bill aimed to bring the long-neglected tribal regions into the mainstream political, legal, and administrative framework of the country. Prior to the merger, FATA was governed under the colonial-era Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR), which denied basic constitutional rights to its residents. The merger was widely supported by human rights organizations and many political parties, as it promised to provide the people of FATA with the same rights and opportunities as other Pakistani citizens. However, the decision was also met with resistance from some local groups who feared a loss of cultural identity and autonomy. The implementation of the merger has been complex and ongoing, requiring extensive reforms in governance, infrastructure, law enforcement, and education. Despite these challenges, the merger is seen as a crucial step toward lasting peace, development, and integration of a historically marginalized region into the national fold.
