Those who devoted their entire life in the service of family society and nation are today facing humiliation neglect and loneliness in the last phase of their life. This is not only a social failure but also a symbol of human worthlessness. Indian society, which once used to take pride in the principle of Matri i Devo Bhava today the elderly are respected only in memories and neglected in behaviour. Modern lifestyle, change in family structures and erosion of moral values have made the condition of the elderly even more pathetic. Elder abuse comes in many forms. Physical violence is the most direct form but apart from this there are many indirect forms of abuse like mental emotional, verbal, economic social neglect and ignorance, which are equally painful. Verbal abuse includes using abusive language, scolding, insulting or repeatedly taunting them about their dependency. Another serious situation is economic exploitation. Depriving them of necessary medical facilities comes under the category of abuse. Help Page Indias survey revealed that more than 60 percent of the elderly have faced some kind of abuse in their lives. The government has made many laws in the interest of senior citizens, the most important of which is the Senior Citizens Maintenance and Welfare Act 2007. Under this, elderly parents can demand maintenance from children and get legal help. Many state governments have taken measures like old age homes, free medical services and helplines.
We have to understand that respecting the elderly is a moral responsibility. The generation which is young today will reach old age tomorrow. If we are not sensitive towards the elderly today then the coming generations will be the same towards us. There is a need that we should not only raise our voice for the rights of the elderly but also give them the dignity they deserve.
