The concept of resilience is often misunderstood. People tend to think of it as the ability to withstand difficulties without breaking, but it’s much more than that. Resilience is about adaptation and growth—it’s about learning from challenges and becoming stronger because of them. For refugees, resilience is not just a quality; it is a way of life. It’s waking up every morning with hope, despite uncertainty. It’s building a new life from the ground up in a place that is unfamiliar and sometimes unwelcoming. It’s holding on to dreams even when circumstances suggest otherwise.
World Refugee Day, celebrated every year on June 20th, is not just a date on the calendar; it is a powerful reminder of the strength, courage, and contributions of millions of people forced to flee their homes. It is a call to action for those of us who are privileged enough to live in peace to stand in solidarity with refugees, to amplify their voices, and to recognize their right to live with dignity and opportunity.
This year, I believe we have a chance to do something truly impactful. I thought we could have a panel discussion at UNICEF to mark the occasion—a conversation that brings together voices from different backgrounds. A UNICEF representative could provide insights into child protection and refugee support, while one or two refugee leaders could share their experiences and community efforts. A local community advocate could discuss integration and support initiatives, and I could represent YPAG, sharing perspectives on youth engagement and the importance of raising refugee voices.
I haven’t reached out to any potential panelists yet, as I wanted to check with UNICEF first to see if this would be possible. I’m also happy to join a call to discuss this further and go over any details. I believe this could be a powerful opportunity to raise awareness, inspire action, and celebrate the resilience of those who have faced unimaginable hardships.
