1. Early Life and Renunciation
Lord Buddha, born as Siddhartha Gautama in 563 BCE, was the son of King Suddhodana and Queen Maya in the Shakya clan in Lumbini, present-day Nepal. Raised in luxury and protected from the harsh realities of the world, Siddhartha married Yashodhara, and they had a son, Rahula. However, at the age of 29, Siddhartha left his palace and encountered the Four Sights that would change his life forever:
An old man: Realizing that old age comes to all.
A sick man: Understanding that illness is inevitable.
A dead body: Confronting the reality of death.
An ascetic: Witnessing peace in a monk, leading Siddhartha to seek liberation.
These sights prompted his Great Renunciation, where he left his royal life to search for answers to life’s suffering around 534 BCE.
