1857: The First War of Indian Independence began.
1885: The Indian National Congress was formed.
1906: The Muslim League was formed.
1920: Mahatma Gandhi launched the Non-Cooperation Movement to oppose British rule.
1930: Mahatma Gandhi led the Dandi March and launched the Civil Disobedience Movement.
1942: The Quit India Movement began.
1947: India was partitioned, ending British rule and leading to the creation of Pakistan.
1948: India went to war with Pakistan over Kashmir.
1951-52: Jawaharlal Nehru led the Congress to victory in the first general election.
1971: Bangladesh was formed.
1975: India launched its first satellite, Aryabhata, into space.

The birth of Gautam Buddha in 563 BC in in Lumbini, Nepal. Gautam Buddha was born on the Vaishakha Poornima Day. He died at the age of 80 in 483 BC at a place called Kushinagara a town in U.P. The event is known as Mahaparinibban.  
The birth of Mahavir in 540 BC in a place called Kundagrama, near Vaishali in Bihar. He died in 468 BC at the age of 72 in Pava, near patna,Bihar. He died by starvation, a practice known as sallekhana. After his followers established Jainism, Which continues to be a major religion in India.
