The debate on whether engaging in active pastimes or spending time reading better develops children's life skills is multifaceted. While reading is undeniably essential in today's digital age, I largely agree that active pursuits offer more comprehensive benefits for life skills development.

Proponents of prioritising reading underscore its foundational importance. Historically, literacy was not widespread, but in the modern world, the ability to read is indispensable. Reading is crucial for navigating the digital landscape, which permeates every aspect of contemporary life. Proficiency in reading and writing is vital for communication, accessing information, and participating in the global economy. Without these skills, children may become alienated from mainstream culture, unable to connect with friends and family, apply for jobs, or conduct research online.

However, while reading skills can be cultivated organically, active pastimes offer broader and often overlooked benefits in a technology-centric society. Traditional life skills, such as automotive maintenance, cooking, and sewing, exemplify practical abilities that are increasingly rare but invaluable. These skills not only enable individuals to perform essential tasks and repairs but also foster self-sufficiency and resourcefulness. Engaging in such activities can also enhance creativity and contribute to better physical and mental health. Studies indicate that active engagement and reduced screen time improve mood, foster lateral thinking, and decrease the prevalence of chronic anxiety disorders.

In conclusion, although reading remains central due to technological advancements, the holistic development of life skills necessitates more active engagement. The benefits of hands-on activities in fostering creativity, health, and practical problem-solving abilities highlight the need for a balanced approach to children's development in an increasingly digital world.
