Advertisements are to be seen everywhere. Wherever we go advertisements stare us in the face. You will find any number of advertisements along the roads on billboards or at railway and bus stations. There are also many private and public businesses these days than ever. And because of that more companies are investing in marketing or advertising about their products and services than ever. Before proceeding any further it is important to understand what advertising really is. According to different experts an advertisement can be defined as a type of marketing conversation which consists of a calculated approach through which a company notifies its target audience regarding its products and services in a very proactive and strategic manner. The importance of advertising has grown exponentially over the years. However just like anything else in life there are bound to be positive and negative effects of advertising. Advertisements do not merely sold products but it sells dreams and ideal ways of life. It sells and then reinforces time and again values those of consumerism and class consciousness. It also trades in stereotypes. Advertising creates and sustains an ideology of consumption. It is a social force affecting Indian homes today. Advertising is a social institution and a necessary social evil. The cost and benefit should be evaluated to determine the total impact of created an incredible awareness among the people in the past decade growing into big industry. It was grown along with the press and today it has found its way into the other two media Radio and Television. Further advertising has a definite role to play in rural development and Indian advertising has made some progress in this direction also. Advertisements of fertilizers and farming equipment have reached rural market successfully.
