Down the caliche path in the arboretum of Uvalde, Texas, Lili the plucky Chiweenie pursued her prey, a doe and a buck grazing in a field one dewy June dawn. Like a crouching fox, the Chiweenie stalked, pivoted one ear toward the pair of deer. The tip of the other, a jaunty button ear, flopped forward; her tail zig-zagged in a diagonal blur. Not as tall as a mature pad of a Prickly Pear Cactus, Lili was every bit as sharp as the spines. Chuy the Porcupine recognized Lili, remarking to Jalena the Black-Tailed Jackrabbit, "There goes our favorite hunter. Do you think she'll catch her breakfast?" (Chuy was a kind-hearted sort; his prima Jalena fondly regarded his tender ways.) "Que chula nuestra luchadora," Luz the Leopard Frog laughed to Sylvestre the Spadefoot Toad. "Mi Conejita," chuckled Sylvestre. He didn't venture out into Lili's line of sight; no need to press his luck. Cook's Slough Sanctuary and Nature Park included acres of wetland: there were two wildlife-viewing stations for visitors to enjoy the natural birding habitat. The Brazilian Free-Tailed Bats were already huddled under the bridge; the mosquitoes were not yet buzzing. Celestino and Yasmina, the buck and doe, raised their sleek heads quizzically as Lili bounded through the Pink Buttercups. "She might bite your pastern!" Yasmina's wry smile lit up her lovely eyes as she exhaled. Celestino flicked his tail toward Lili; leisurely strolling through the Firewheels mixed with Basketflowers. Undeterred, the brave-hearted Chiweenie of Uvalde woofed at Arman the Armadillo as she trotted over the caliche toward town; some beneficent customer in cowboy boots would offer her tri-tip and sweet potato fries from the porch at Evett's Bar-B-Que, or at least let her lap up the oxtail soup. She could wait: if one person wouldn't toss her a morsel, the next one would. She wasn't one to give up quite so easily.
