No one can deny the fact that democracy will survive only when there is freedom of press or media. Since a democracy depends on its citizens, these citizens must be well informed so that they can make political decisions and elect their representatives appropriately. However, this is impossible or creates difficulty for every citizen to search for such information on their own. This is where the press comes in. It comes to the media to gather, verify and publicize information that can help people make decisions that allow democracy to work. As such, the press becomes a powerful tool for the efficient functioning of a democratic government. By reporting verified facts, the press not only allows people to be knowledgeable about what is going on, but also serves as an investigation on the government. It becomes clear that, the press should be free to do its work. It should not face censorship that hides important information from the public. The right to freedom of speech and expression also includes the right to freedom of the press. If members of the press are bullied and harassed or stigmatized for no reason people lose the only tool to effectively participate in the freedom and democracy of their country.
