If we look around us, we shall be dismayed by the sad spectacle of so many people languishing in life just because they have chosen wrong careers. He who had the makings of a brilliant poet is busy copying out nd totalling numbers in a ledger. And he who could have made an excellent accountant is handling the television camera. He who is utterly deficient in creative imagination is running an advertising agency and she who could have shaped the lives of scores of children as a teacher is wasting her days at the typing desk. It is a dismal state of affairs all around us. We do not fit in where we are : we are square pegs in round holes. Most of us have just bungled our careers. We feel very uncomfortable, we realise the damage but we cannot redeem the situation.
Making a mistake in determining one's career causes incalculable damage. First of all, it leads to the waste of individual talent. The greatness of a nation depends upon the level of exploitation of its resources. It might be having rich natural resources in the form of rivers, forests and mines. But if these resources are not fully utilised, it cannot make any significant progress. Human beings constitute the most important resource material of a nation. How can it register any achievement if it allows human potential to go waste?
We feel happy if we are doing the kind of work we like. If a job for which we have no aptitude is imposed upon us, we develop aversion for it. Work that does not exploit our potential fully will be less satisfying both intellectually and economically. It is sure to lead us to frustration. And a frustrated man can never do justice to any job. If a person holding a post-graduate degree in science has to take up a clerical job, he will do it badly out of total pathy and indifference towards it. He will gradually become not only lethargic and listless but also incompetent. He will become a liability both for the society and the nation.
Why are people forced to choose wrong careers? Much of the responsibility lies with India's large population. The avenues of employment being scarce, there is stiff competition for every vacancy.
