The Dalai Lama had accepted to be the spiritual teacher of the Manchu kings, in return for which he received patronage from the kings. But it cannot be interpreted at all that Tibet lost its independence by doing so. When Britain attacked Lhasa in the early 20th century, China's control of Tibet at that time had been nullified. From 1911 to 1950, until the suzerainty of China, Tibet remained a completely independent nation.
If we talk about China's occupation of Tibet, in 1949 Mao Tse Tung established his power in China while the next year the Chinese Red Army forcibly entered Tibet. However  there was an agreement between the Communist Government of China and the representatives of Tibet in  according to which China agreed not to tamper with the political, cultural and religious institutions of Tibet. But this agreement was only to show off.
In 1959, in Lhasa the capital of Tibet  people gathered in large numbers and asked China to leave Tibet. After this due to China's repressive action the spiritual teacher Dalai Lama had to take refuge in India, leaving Tibet with his supporters. Remember that the government in exile is working in Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh.

India gave shelter to the Dalai Lama and Tibetan refugees on the condition that they would not engage in any political activities. It is needless to reiterate that the Dalai Lama has kept his promise with utmost loyalty. The Chinese government holds the Dalai Lama responsible for the violence and disturbances in Tibet.
Many experts also believe that the Dalai Lama is to some extent responsible for the complexity of the issue of Tibet because he did not demand the membership of the United Nations for Tibet and the necessary pressure on China to speak of autonomy under China Not made The Dalai Lama did not call for a boycott of the Olympic Games  despite the killing of many innocent Tibetans and the persecution of China.
